Salary Range: Teacher Pay Scale + supplement for two additional weeks

Time Off Plan: 6 weeks summer break, 10 days PTO, school holidays consistent with teacher days off

 

Job Description

The Reading Coach is responsible for supporting literacy instruction by demonstrating a deep understanding of literacy competencies. They play a key role in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) by using data to inform instruction and interventions. The coach is actively involved in planning and implementing Summer Reading Camp and must be knowledgeable in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) to support evidence-based reading practices. Their work includes guiding teachers, modeling lessons, and ensuring instructional fidelity aligned with current literacy standards and research.

  • Assist with progress monitoring student growth and academic performance  
  • Communicate with learning coaches, teachers, and school administration  
  • Provide reading specific professional development for the teaching staff and coaching as directed  
  • Works collaboratively with the classroom teachers and building staff to support meeting proficiency on standards and to coordinate the need for support/intervention.  
  • Analyzes student data  
  • Collaborates with grade-level teachers and administration to support student learning plans
  • Creates lesson plans and activities to enhance student learning in areas of need
  • Model effective instructional strategies for teachers by working weekly with students in whole, and small groups, or individually
  • Facilitate study groups  
  • Train teachers in data analysis and using data to differentiate instruction
  • Coaching and mentoring colleagues  
  • Work with teachers to ensure that research-based reading programs are implemented with fidelity
  • Work with all teachers (including content area and elective areas) and help prioritize time for those teachers, activities, and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement, namely coaching and mentoring in the classrooms
  • Assist in leading and supporting reading leadership teams

 

Required Education, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and has or is actively pursuing the Read to Succeed Literacy Coach or Read to Succeed Literacy Specialist endorsement OR
  • Bachelor's degree or higher and is actively pursuing a literacy coach endorsement through an alternative program that has been approved by both the district and by the SCDE Office of Early Learning and Literacy OR
  • Master’s degree or higher in reading or a closely related field and is actively pursuing the Read to Succeed Literacy Coach or Read to Succeed Literacy Specialist endorsement.
  • Five (5) years teaching experience
  • High comfort level with current educational technology tools  
  • Comfort working within a cyber school setting  
  • Has strong reading pedagogical content knowledge  
  • Expertise responding to and tracking student data  
  • Clear communication skills both written and verbally  
  • Demonstrates collaboration with teachers, administration, and learning coaches 
  • Strong organization and task management skills  
  • Has demonstrated ability to improve student achievement in reading
  • Ability to pass required background check. 

 

Required Certification: Valid South Carolina teaching certificate with Elementary School Reading Interventionist endorsement

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate coursework or degree in Education, Language Arts or related field  
  • Reading Specialist Certification  
  • Experience in or demonstrable knowledge of the field of education, specifically SC charter schools

This is a full-time position. Ability to work independently, typically 40+ hours per week is required. Ability to maintain a professional home office without distraction during workday, typically 8-4 or as defined by the school. 


This is an annual contract position.
