SPED Resource Teacher Job Description
Contract Length: 195 days per year

At SCVCS, a South Carolina certified SPED teacher is responsible for delivering specific course content in an online synchronous and asynchronous environment, providing instruction, support, and guidance to parents and students, monitoring students' individual learning needs, and actively collaborating with families to advance each student’s education.
As part of the regular teaching responsibilities, teachers are expected to fulfill duties in the following areas:
PLANNING AND PREPARATION:
• Learn the curriculum in its entirety for assigned grade levels.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the state standards and how both align with the SCVCS curriculum.
• Understand the overall diversity of assigned families and individual characteristics of students/parents; specifically, how this impacts support needed.
• Utilize asynchronous and synchronous tools to augment course content according to prescribed policies and procedures.
INSTRUCTION AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT:
• Orient students to the course and communicate course requirements.
• Maintain regular office hours and conduct instructional sessions.
• Set and enforce deadlines for student work.
• Support parents with student curricular and instructional issues.
• Balance flexibility of the curriculum with SCVCS policies and procedures.
• Conduct conferences with students and parents/responsible adult documented in notes.
• Individualize instruction to help each student achieve curricular objectives.
• Communicate high expectations and show an active interest in student's achievement.
• Alert administrators to any concerns about student performance and progress.
• Recommend promotion and retention.
• Provide focused academic support to the student on a schedule determined by the IEP through phone conferencing and virtual real-time interaction.
• Provide focused support to the parent on accommodations and interventions to promote the attainment of IEP goals through phone conferencing and virtual real-time interaction.
• Collect data and work samples to support documentation of IEP goals.
• Assign weekly and quarterly grades in PowerSchool.
• Document all contact with parents, collaborations with general education teachers, and interventions with students.
• Provide focused support to all supplemental programs being used by the special needs students to ensure participation and progress.
• Communicate with parents and therapists to ensure that special education students are receiving the appropriate therapies.
• Provide direct instruction in the content areas.
• Design individualized lessons to address IEP objectives.
• Providing instruction in functional and daily living skills to promote independent living skills in live class sessions as needed.
• Create and disseminate modified calendar for weekly assignment completion.
• Make accommodations to curriculum lessons and assessments as specified by the IEP.
• Develop the students’ IEP, meeting all annual review timelines and notification requirements.
• Ensure the students’ IEP is focused on attainment of grade appropriate academic standards as defined by the state.
• Ensure that all reevaluations are completed within specific timelines as defined by state agency.
• Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure success of students in the general education classroom.
• Collaborate with the general education teachers on all progress, semester and grade reports where appropriate for electives.
• Monitor and ensure students’ success in general education courses, assemblies and field trips.
• Maintain all required reports assigned by the SPED Director, including student progress reports.
• Ensure that assigned students participate in state testing and receive monitored accommodation as defined by the IEP.
VIRTUAL CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT:
• Create and manage home office.
• Establish and maintain a positive rapport with assigned families.
• Support students with set-up and maintenance of their learning environment and through basic computer troubleshooting.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Collaborate with peers.
• Build community by contributing to school message boards, newsletter and events.
• Travel to and participate in staff meetings and professional development sessions and attend all social outings.
• Organize social and educational activities for students and families, including sponsorship of one virtual club.
• Assist in student assessment administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum of five years public school Special Education teaching.
• Required valid South Carolina area certification in subject/grade being taught.
• Required ability to travel within and between assigned geographic areas to support students, participate in regularly scheduled meetings, and school activities.
• Virtual teaching experience preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Google, and Zoom.
• Strong communication and time management skills
