Duties: Assist local school districts or Statewide Early Intervention with the assessment of students who are blind or visually impaired and the reporting of educational and adaptive needs in the areas of visual development, literacy, social, self-help, Orientation and Mobility and other areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum. Work with families in the natural environment and local school districts in the school-based setting to schedule lessons, adapt instructional materials, and provide instruction in Braille, use of residual vision, Orientation and Mobility and other areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum. Assist in the development of appropriate individualized education plans or individual family service plans based on assessments. Participates in IFSP and IEP meetings.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree with SC Teacher License in Visual Impairment and two years of experience working with students (birth to 21 years) who are blind or visually impaired. Must be able to work effectively and cooperatively with parents, teachers, and other professionals in the provision of services. Must be proficient in the teaching of Braille and other adaptive skills needs by students who are blind or visually impaired. Must have considerable knowledge of methods to evaluate the educational needs of blind or visually impaired students. Requires frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending and occasional lifting up to 30 pounds. Must be able to respond to a student emergency.
