POSITION TITLE:      Speech Therapist
 
            Department:    Special Education
            Reports To:      Director of Special Services
            
SUMMARY:  Helps students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
 
Þ      Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
Þ      Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
Þ      Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
Þ      Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
Þ      Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
Þ      Guides the learning process toward achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
Þ      Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the individual needs and capabilities of the students involved.
Þ      Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
Þ      Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
Þ      Assesses the special needs of each student on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
Þ      Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Þ      Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
Þ      Follows all legal requirements and district procedures for preparing and following individualized education programs for students.
Þ      Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
Þ      Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
Þ      Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
Þ      Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
Þ      Attends staff meetings and in-service activities as directed.
Þ      Serves on staff committees as required.
Þ      Maintains professional relationships with students and faculty; follows ethics of the teaching profession; and promotes the welfare of students at all times.
Þ      Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about individual students.
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises students and assumes other supervisory duties as assigned by building principal.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Certification as a Speech Therapist. Degree in the area of major study. Must be able to effectively deal with students, parents and staff both in person and on the phone.
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, procedure manuals and business correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.
 
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Certification as a Speech Language Pathologist
 
DAYS/SALARY: 190 Days/ Teacher Salary Schedule
