MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field with at least 18 credit hours in your discipline as well as industry experience and three (3) years of successful teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level. Strong background in exhibiting work. Knowledge of modern technology in an art studio. Experience teaching animation and managing a dedicated studio.
MFA in area of specialization. National and regional exhibition record in past five years. Demonstrated knowledge and interpersonal skills to work with public school students who have exceptional artistic potential and achievement, other arts and academic educators, and diverse constituencies and cultures. Experience teaching and administering summer art programs for middle/high school students. Experience with outreach and curriculum design for K-12 visual arts teachers and students. Experience teaching animation. A willingness to try new collaborative efforts, teach new topics (ranging from drawing to digital sculpting, etc.), work with diverse students on student proposed projects. Administrative experience such as departmental leadership and/or with recruiting, organizing, leading, representing department and school. The ability to write well, communicate respectfully with students and colleagues in critiques and meetings. Preferred candidates will also have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as an educator and artist.
The ideal candidate would have knowledge of at least one of the following skills: Traditional 2D Animation, Stop Motion Animation, Motion Design, Storyboarding/Pre-production, Film/Digital Production, Advanced Post-Production, Computer Animation, Motion Capture, 3D Printing and Modeling, 3D Virtual Reality, Multimedia Installation Art, Intermedia/New Media, Interactive Media, New Media Coding, Game Design, Digital Media, Photobashing, Concept Art, Digital Photographic Imaging, and/or Digital Drawing and Illustration
SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:
The instructor will advance the mission of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities to identify and teach South Carolina's artistically talented high school students through programs or pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. Candidate will also advance the school's mission by serving as a resource for all teachers and students in South Carolina. Our students are highly committed and have a foundational year taking classes in all visual arts disciplines offered, then focus in the senior year on fewer classes for deeper learning, leading to the concentration semester where approximately 4 students work with you, the artist-teacher-mentor, to create a sophisticated final body of work. In consultation with the Department Chair or Dean, develops and instructs a curriculum in accordance with state and national standards, utilizing the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency and the school's curriculum as adopted by the Board of Directors. Organizes and implements an instructional program that supports student success in accordance with the Mission and core beliefs of the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, including development of appropriate differentiated instruction strategies and other mechanisms to meet the needs of the school's diverse student population. Just a few of the many notable alumni achievements include teaching (at various levels including in the Visual Arts Department of Yale University), working in the creative industries (professional photographers, painters with gallery representation, Webby award winner at Google, industrial design at a major automotive manufacturer), getting featured in major periodicals (Art in America, Art21, New American Painting), as well as successes outside of the arts.
Develops in writing and in consultation with the Department Chair or Dean, an annual goal in a three-year cycle as part of an ongoing performance evaluation program. Participates in faculty and departmental meetings, committees, programs, and other events that promote excellence and growth in the department and school. Participates in the audition/admissions review process as requested by the Department Chair or Dean, and demonstrates interest and engagement in student performances and other school-wide activities. Participates in Outreach initiatives.
Demonstrates excellence in continued artistic and academic pursuits. Represents SCGSAH and the department through active involvement in professional activities and organizations. Strengthens personal pursuits and professional ties by participating, exhibiting, performing, and/or making presentations for public groups, districts and schools, parent groups, etc. Other related duties may be assigned by the Department Chair or Administration.
Animation is supported as an integral part of the Visual Art Department’s curriculum, which can be seen in our facilities. We have a team environment, where all visual arts teachers work collaboratively. For example, an animation teacher may collaborate with a sculpture teacher and utilize their facilities as opportunities arise. Animation specific facilities currently include three classroom spaces. One classroom has 11 stations with DSLR down-shooters to PCs running the Adobe Suite, Dragonframe, Maya, Blender, Zbrush, and more. Another classroom has a devoted stop motion stage, and additional equipment and facilities. The third space typically used is a shared lecture room with projector and appropriate computer equipment adjacent to the aforementioned facilities for lecture or demos. We have also supported game design, film, digital sculpting, and other animation-adjacent student projects and classes.

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities gives young emerging artists the opportunity to explore and refine their talents in a one-of-a-kind, arts-centered community. Nestled behind Falls Park in scenic downtown Greenville, students live and learn in a safe and supportive environment where they have everything they need to pursue their artistic passion and discover who they are as individuals and as artists.
As a state-funded, public, residential high school, serving sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the Governor's School gives artistically talented students from across the state the opportunity to receive pre-professional training in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts.
The tuition-free, nine-month program is modeled after a master-apprentice community with arts faculty who are all practicing artists, as well as educators in their areas of expertise.
In addition to rigorous pre-professional arts training, students receive an intense and innovative academic education and an exploration in the Humanities, while meeting all the requirements necessary for a South Carolina high school diploma. Learn more about our Residential High School.
The Governor's School's summer programs offer younger students the opportunity to immerse themselves in their artistic passion while also receiving the same caliber of training as the high school program, but in a shorter period of time.
As a part of our mission, the Governor's School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive Outreach Programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations and students.
