Job Description

Position Summary:

The College and Career Readiness Counselor will serve Bridges Preparatory juniors and seniors. This Counselor is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive college and career readiness counseling program within the school-based comprehensive school counseling program, while ensuring that all students graduate high school career and college ready. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive school counseling program to serve the academic, social and career development needs of students enrolled in Bridges Preparatory School. This position supports the instructional and academic goals of Bridges Preparatory School. The incumbent also serves as a consultant to educators, families and community partners.  Collaborate with instructional teams and administrators to increase student learning and positive, nurturing environment.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Develop college and career counseling goals that align and support the comprehensive school counseling goals and stratetic plan.
  • Assists students with ACT/SAT eligiblity questions, registration and collaborate accordlingly. 
  • Coordinate post-secoindary fairs and recruitment visists and ensure equitable access for all students. 
  • Complete recommendations letters and form from colleges and scholarship agencies. 
  • Coordinate community and parent events to support post-secondaryplan awareness. 
  • Uses data to develop and inform the school counseling program and evaluates the program’s impact on the school’s instructional goals.
  • Collaborates on the development and management of the comprehensive school counseling program with the Principal, CEO or instructional leaders.
  • Communicates and shares the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to stakeholders including students, families and community partners.
  • Uses the majority of the time to provide direct services to students through preventive and responsive services.
  • Meet one on one with students to improve performance and address behavioral issues.
  • Hold conferences with parents and guardians as needed.
  • Stay abreast on current topics in education.
  • Consults with families and staff to appraise student needs and interests and to discuss appropriate recommendations for educational options.
  • Plans, coordinates and provides the classroom guidance sessions to meet the identified guidance and counseling competencies in the areas of academic achievement, career and educational development, and personal and social development to assist students in developing decision-making skills and identifying life goals.
  • Assesses student needs and makes referrals to appropriate Principal for school resource, social agencies, community agencies and alternative programs.

Environment:

The environment for this position is in a office, school, and classroom setting that is clean and comfortable. It may include some minor annoyances such as noise, odors, drafts, etc. The employee is in a non-confined classroom type setting in which he or she is free to move about at will. In addition, the employee will travel via personal vehicle or public transportation to workplace events and meetings.

Equipment and Software Operation:

The incumbent in this position may operate any/all of the following equipment:

  • Telephone, cell phone and fax machine
  • Computer, printer and related equipment
  • Copy machine, Calculator
  • Audio-visual equipment
  • Microsoft Office, Excel Office, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Google / Docs or similar 
  • Power School

 Key Competencies: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in specific area of education and preferred Masters in Education, Counseling or related.
  • Hold and maintain state certification.
  • Three to Five years teaching experience preferred but not required.
  • Organized, capable and able to multitask.
  • Highly confidential with student related material.
  • Ability to deal with people effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and school personnel.
  • A keen understanding of stakeholder relationship management, customer service, and teamwork.
  • Must have exceptional written and oral communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in groups using good judgment and discretion.
  • Superior interpersonal skills required. 

Other Requirements: 

  • Background screenings and SLED check required.
  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license, proof of auto insurance coverage if requested, daily access to a personal vehicle.
  • Occasionally the ability to work hours outside of a normal school workday.
  • Familiarity with public education charter school helpful but not required.
  • Professional demeanor and appearance a must.
