Our district is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the Graduate by providing educational opportunities that engage all students in a challenging and rigorous curriculum led by highly-qualified staff. The district does this in a safe and encouraging environment that provides students at every level the support necessary to maximize their potential.
As technology continues to transform every aspect of our society, its influence on education and learning is staggering. Recognizing that impact, we want our students to be equipped with the tools they need to be successful in the classroom and the workforce. In 2017-18, our District’s 1:1 technology initiative will be fully implemented. Every student will be given a laptop to enhance learning in the classroom. They will also have the opportunity to take that laptop home, and continue the learning outside the traditional classroom. This is critical as we prepare our students to be successful in college, in their careers, and in a global community.
As the traditional “look” of the classroom changes, 2017-18 will bring the addition of more model teachers in all of our District Five schools. These educators will open up the doors of their classrooms to peers, modeling best practices with the integration of technology and project-based learning. The ultimate goal is to ensure all of our students are actively engaged in their own learning: collaborating with one another, producing authentic work, and communicating that work beyond the four walls of the classroom.
District Five Schools continue to implement programs that produce globally conscious students. As an example, opportunities in foreign language development are provided at the elementary levels in a multitude of languages. Computer applications skills are incorporated in project-based learning activities as early as second grade, leading to opportunities to earn high school credit for Career and Technology Education courses in middle school. The Project Lead the Way engineering program continues to grow as a way to encourage students to consider manufacturing and engineering careers in an ever-expanding local manufacturing community.
District Five’s fine arts programs continue to be some of the top programs in the state and nation, led and supported by world class instructors and facilities. As these programs grow in both participation and quality, we are confident they are producing well rounded students, whose exposure to the arts and sciences prepares them for a diverse world.
District Five remains dedicated to its focus on education. We embrace the Profile of the SC Graduate, striving to produce knowledgeable citizens who will energize and build our economy. Our graduates excel in the skills needed to succeed: written and oral communication, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, entrepreneurialism, collaboration, initiative, and adaptability.
